This week, we are in Oslo with fellow human rights defenders from across the Network of Human Rights Houses, discussing key human rights trends in the Balkans, Caucasus, and Eastern Europe with Norwegian civil society and policy-makers.
In his address, Dušan Pokuševski, a representative from the Human Rights House Belgrade, highlighted the escalating challenges faced by human rights defenders, civil society organizations, and activists in Serbia. “Human rights defenders in Serbia are facing increasing attacks, threats, and SLAPP lawsuits. Police brutality during the numerous protests mostly remains unresolved, which leads to the conclusion that there is impunity when it comes to attacks on human rights defenders and activists”, stated Pokuševski. He noted that in August 2024 alone, at least 33 activists were arrested or detained across 17 cities in Serbia, while a massive smear campaign targeted 39 organizations and 11 donors. “The shrinking civic space has intensified, particularly affecting those advocating for environmental protection, human rights, and anti-corruption“, he explained.
The discussions in Oslo are part of the 30th-anniversary celebration of the Network of Human Rights Houses. This gathering serves as a crucial platform for raising awareness about the increasing threats faced by human rights defenders and underscores the urgent need for international solidarity and strengthened support.
